There are different types of packaging hierarchies. The type of the packaging hierarchy is dependent of its sales batches and delivery types.

Packaging hierarchy with only one level

The packaging hierarchy can comprise only one level, the base unit (BASE_UNIT_OR_EACH). Examples include:

• 5 kg sack of potatoes;
• packet of fish sold at a service desk;
• Dyno box of mixed greens to a Horeca operator;
• magazine.

Regardless of the type of the smallest item/lowest level the packaging hierarchy, its trade item unit descriptor F7158 must always be BASE UNIT OR EACH. If the packaging hierarchy has no base unit, the recipients cannot process any level of the packaging hierarchy. Furthermore, it is not possible to provide any information on product features (classification, tax rate, hazardous substances), if the hierarchy does not have a base unit.

If your packaging hierarchy has one level, select Yes in the following fields:

• Is Trade Item A Base Unit F7307;
• Is Trade Item an Orderable Unit F7151;
• Is Trade Item an Invoice Unit F7125;
• Is Trade Item a Despatch Unit F7090.

If the base unit is not delivered on a GTIN-coded pallet, you must provide it with pallet data, i.e. logistics information on its shipping.

Packaging hierarchy with one base unit and one case

If the packaging hierarchy contains more than one GTIN-coded level, the information provider must establish the levels in the Data Pool. If the resale unit does not have its own unique GTIN code, it cannot be established in the Synkka Data Pool.

If the packaging hierarchy has both a base unit and a level above this, the trade item unit descriptor of the upper level is determined by the agreed rules on packaging types.

The packaging hierarchy cannot have two base units at different levels.

If the level above the base unit is not a GTIN-coded pallet and if the packaging hierarchy does not contain a GTIN-coded pallet, the level above the base unit must be given pallet information (Case level Non-GTIN). 

In this case, select No in the following fields:

• Is Trade Item A Base Unit F7307;
• Is Trade Item a Consumer Unit F7060.

Select Yes/No in the following fields, depending on how the case will be handled:

• Is Trade Item an Orderable Unit F7151;
• Is Trade Item an Invoice Unit F7125;
• Is Trade Item a Despatch Unit F7090.

Sales unit is packed on a pallet without GTIN
If the case containing the base unit is packed on a logistics pallet that has no GTIN code, the information on the pallet must be provided at the case level, i.e. pallet information is always provided at the highest level of the packaging hierarchy.
Each branch of the packaging hierarchy may contain only one pallet without a GTIN code.

Base unit is packed on a GTIN-coded pallet
If the base unit has no GTIN-coded case but it is packed directly on a GTIN-coded pallet, the packaging hierarchy will have two levels; base unit and pallet.

The lowest level is always base unit or each, and the level above it is either:

• CASE, which contains one GTIN-coded trade item;
• DISPLAY_SHIPPER, which contains at least two GTIN-coded trade items.

The highest level of the packaging hierarchy is a GTIN-coded pallet, the Trade Item Unit Descriptor (F7158) of which is PALLET.

One packaging hierarchy may contain several pallets.

Packaging hierarchy with multiple branches

The lowest level is always the base unit (BASE_UNIT_OR_EACH). One base unit may belong to several packaging hierarchy branches. Each sales batch is established as a separate branch.
Shop pallets and single-GTIN cases form a separate branch. These units must always be directly linked to the base unit.

Products not delivered on pallets

If the product is not delivered on a pallet, fill in the highest level of the packaging hierarchy as follows:

• Is Trade Item a Despatch Unit F7090 = Yes.

This is the only pallet information needed in this case. Please note that pallet information may be left blank only in the case of certain product groups/trade items, as agreed. Products that do not require pallet information:

• magazines;
• products that are never delivered in multiple sales batches;
• direct deliveries;
• half-empty transboxes.
